Excerpt from Biennial Report of the Directors and the Forty-First and Forty-Second Annual Reports of the Superintendent of the Insane Asylum of the State of California (at Stockton): For the Two Years Ending June 30, 1894

Reference is here made to the report of the Superintendent concerning the improvements in the kitchens, and also repairs made to the original asylum building. The marked changes in the condition of the kitchens effected by the adoption of the devices for preventing the rooms from being filled with steam, are very noticeable, and the results accomplished are extremely satisfactory; while the repairs made upon the old asylum building were absolutely necessary, and have been skillfully and wisely made. The earth taken from the basement has been judiciously used in grading and beautifying the main avenue in the asylum grounds. Many less noticeable, but still important, changes have been made throughout the different departments and wards by the introduction of galvanized iron sinks to take the place of those made of wood formerly in use, in the rearrangement of rooms, and offices, the putting in of new windows for light and ventilation, the construction of new water-closets and bath-rooms, and the overhauling and repairs of others.

The roof of the administration building had become defective and leaky, and owing to the rusty condition of the tin with which it was originally covered, to repair it was impossible, and therefore the defective tin was removed and the roof re-covered with slate, making a covering to the building which will be satisfactory and durable.
