Inhaltsangabe

This is a book about the war between the certainties of science and the certainties of its opponents.

In 'The Heretics', Will Storr travels the world to meet the individuals who challenge the established orthodoxy, and examines the way people come to adopt the strangest and sometimes most dangerous beliefs. Starting with creationists, homeopaths, and yogics, Storr then moves on to the intolerant and dangerous side of heresy such as deniers of the Holocaust (David Irvine) and of climate change (Lord Monckton). Finally he challenges the professional sceptics whose own beliefs can be as unbending and irrational as those of their opponents.

The characters on both sides of the battlefield are eccentric, opinionated, infuriating, brilliant people. These are stories of imaginary diseases, homeopathic wonders, miracle-curing gurus, the aforementioned Holocaust and climate change deniers, and 9-11 truthers. Yet the book also acts as an exploration of Storr's own beliefs, those taught to him by his family, and in turn the book forces us to confront our own preconceptions and prejudices.
