Inhaltsangabe

Fused Deposition Modeling of Composite Materials is dedicated to the field of 3D-printing of composite materials using a popular technique called Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), the world’s most popular 3D printing method. But this method is currently limited to printing basic polymers and only a handful of primitive composite materials. Many future industries, such as Space, Biomed, Construction and Defense are waiting for the ability to 3D print composites and new functional materials with complex shapes and features so they can add unique and customizable features to their parts, including biocompatibility, radiation shielding, high-strength, rapid cooling, flexibility and shape-memory.

The book's authors take the reader through the basics of what the FDM technique is all about and describe the advantages and new opportunities arising from 3D printing innovative materials, which include polymer-matrix composites and fully inorganic parts. They then review and discuss methods for making the different types of composite feedstock filaments needed to 3D print such materials by FDM. Finally, sections discuss the challenges that should be considered in making filaments and parts and how to go about solving them.

Fused Deposition Modeling of Composite Materials is a comprehensive book dedicated to the emerging field of 3D-printing of composite materials and fully inorganic parts by using the popular technique called Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). FDM is by far the world’s most popular 3D printing method, but currently it is limited to printing basic polymers and only a small handful of primitive composite materials. Many future industries, such as Space, Biomed, Construction and Defence are craving for the ability to 3D print composites and new functional materials with complex shapes and features, so that they can add all sorts of unique and customizable features to their parts, such as biocompatibility, radiation shielding, high-strength, rapid cooling, flexibility and shape-memory. Nowadays more and more research is emerging showing that this can soon become a reality. In this exemplary new book the authors first take the reader through the basics of what the FDM technique is all about and describe what are the advantages and new opportunities arising from 3D printing innovative materials, which include polymer-matrix composites and fully inorganic parts. They then review and discuss methods for making the different types of composite feedstock filaments that are needed to 3D print such materials by FDM. The authors talk about the challenges that should be considered in making the filaments and parts, and how to go about solving them, with many examples along the way. Finally, they end with some open challenges in the field and what critical steps the research community is called to take in order to realise this ambitious goal in the coming years, hopefully giving the reader sufficient insight and tools to embark on this challenge. The book will be an essential reference resource for academic and industrial researchers working in the manufacturing of composite materials especially fused deposition modeling.
