Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Frederik Pohl (1919-2013) was one of science fiction's most important authors. Among his many novels are Gateway, which won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award, the Hugo Award, the Locus SF Award, and the Nebula Award, Beyond the Blue Event Horizon, which was a finalist for the Hugo and Nebula Awards, and Jem, which won the 1980 National Book Award in Science Fiction. He also collaborated on classic science fiction novels including The Space Merchants with Cyril M. Kornbluth. Pohl was an award-winning editor of Galaxy and If, a book editor at Bantam, and served as president of the Science Fiction Writers of America. He was named a Grand Master of Science Fiction by SFWA in 1993, and was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.

Rezensionen

This concludes editor Pohl's survey of the lives and work of the 15 recipients of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America's lifetime achievement award, the Grand Master Nebula. Pohl is one of them, and he includes four of his own stories here, of which "The Gold at the Starbow's End," which inaugurated his Heechee universe stories, may be the most noteworthy. Probably only omnivorous sf mavens will have previously encountered the pieces by Damon Knight and Jack Vance that Pohl proffers, while on the other hand, many will know Lester Del Rey's perception of the spiritual impulse, "For I Am a Jealous People," and A. E. Van Vogt's classic alien-contact story, "Black Destroyer," from which grew The Voyage of the Space Beagle (1950). Like the contents of the first two volumes, the 20 stories here should be regarded as valuable acquisitions or reacquisitions for any sf collection. Roland Green

The SFWA Grand Masters: Volume Three, edited by Frederik Pohl, includes classic tales by Lester Del Rey, editor Pohl, Damon Knight, A.E. Van Vogt and Jack Vance. For the moment at least, as Pohl indicates in his intro, this will be the last in this appealing anthology series.
