Vaslav is a boy with a sordid past and tenuous future. Born Johnny to a drug-addicted prostitute, Johnny becomes Vaslav when, at age seven, his mother dies of a drug overdose and a passing stranger befriends him and brings him to Australia to pass as his own, recently deceased son. As Vaslav, he lives a comfortable life as the well-loved son of a prominent gay man, but when he becomes a teenager he realizes that "Johnny" still lurks inside him. With the seeds of his own destruction sown deep within, Vaslav initiates a forbidden love affair, one that threatens to destroy him and all that he loves.

Glove Puppet is a brilliant novel where love and transgression, sex and manipulation, collapse upon each other, and where the best intentions yield the worst results.

From the Publisher:

"Racy as hell...hip, intelligent, sexy Johnny-Vas is one of the few literary adolescents as robust and intriguing as Huck Finn." --Booklist (starred review)

"A courageously written and compelling novel, original and strongly written." --Sydney Star

"A searingly perceptive narrative." --Publishers Weekly

"One of the most exciting literary debuts for some years...It manages the critical balancing act of simultaneously exploring the familiar and taking the reader somewhere new." -- Outrage

"This is a thoroughly perverse book and Drinnan's conscious determination to break just about every taboo that people still take seriously makes it worthwhile. Glove Puppet isn't any sort of grim read, though. It's more a black comedy of manners, an inverted Jane Austen...Drinnan writes with verve, economy, and wit." -- Big Issue

About the Author:

Neal Drinnan was born in 1964 in Melbourne, Australia, and was dubiously educated at various (now defunct) high schools and Camberwell Boys' Grammar. At the age of seventeen, he abandoned his education and suburban family home life for the lure of Chapel Street and life's more ephemeral things. He has worked in publishing for many years, has been a frequent contributor to OUTRAGE magazine, and is a regular columnist for Sydney's Capital Q. He lives in South Wales, Australia. Glove Puppet is his first novel.
