Drawing on newly discovered secret service papers now in the Public Record Office in Kew, Geoghegan (history, Royal Irish Academy) finds inextricable links between the passage of the Act of Union and the resignation of British Prime Minister William Pitt, which most historians have treated separately. He argues that Pitt's resignation was not, as generally interpreted, a cynical withdrawal from office to dodge the Catholic question, but a matter of principle. The study is based on a 1997 doctoral dissertation for University College Dublin. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
