A new war rages in Russia's post-communist climate of instability, where there are no loyalties and no laws. On one side, the new KGB, no longer backed by the communist government, is determined to retain the power and secret privilege it enjoyed in the past. But on the other side a network of underground mafia - "the loop" - has surfaced, led by Pulat Usmanov, a powerful Russian gangster supported by vast, illicit profits.
