Inhaltsangabe

This publication from the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Medical Preparedness for a Terrorist Nuclear Event is a result of a workshop held in 2008 prompted by the Department of Homeland Security to better understand the state of preparedness for an improvised nuclear device detonation in the six Urban Area Security Initiatives designated as "Tier 1." The workshop brought together specialists in emergency medical response and treatment, medical and public health preparedness, health sciences research, and nuclear medicine to review and summarize overall emergency response activities and health care capacity, identify gaps, review and summarize available treatments for radiation illnesses, and appraise the expected benefit of medical countermeasures. Other topics addressed include risk communication, public reactions, and psychological consequences; federal and state medical resources; and current preparedness to prevent and treat delayed casualties.
