This volume contains one of three reports produced by the National Academies' Institute of Medicine Committee on the Future of Emergency Care in the United States Health System, charged with examining the current state of the emergency care system; its strengths, limitations, and future challenges; the desired state of the system; and strategies for achieving that state. As the title indicates, this report focuses on hospital-based emergency care and focuses on the changing role of the hospital emergency department and the national epidemic of overcrowded emergency rooms and trauma centers. It addresses such issues as uncompensated emergency and trauma care, availability of specialists, medical liability exposure, management of patient flow, hospital disaster preparedness, and support for emergency and trauma research.
