Scientists, public health officials, and policy makers have increasingly been wondering whether the emergence and spread of infectious diseases could be affected by environmental factors. Easy answers did not present themselves, so in January 1999 a number of US government agencies established a committee of 16 researchers from a broad range of disciplines to conduct a formal investigation. They report on evidence from the past, climate influence on specific diseases, analytical approaches for studying the linkages, temporal and spatial scaling, and developing a disease early warning system.
