In light of the voluminous physiological data unleashed by the modern approaches to cellular and molecular biology, experimentalists and theoreticians look at the developments and trends in understanding the central auditory system and other sensory system with a view to focusing research toward some of the fundamental problems. The 21 papers consider such aspects as the processing of vocalization signals in neurons of the inferior colliculus and medial geniculate body, specializations of the auditory system for analyzing natural sounds, a computational model of bird song learning by auditory experience and feedback, behavioral and physiological studies of sound localization in the cat, medical image data compression using cubic convolution spline interpolation, and dynamic mechanisms of perception exhibited by bat biosonar. Another 21 poster papers are abstracted. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
