"This book examines the decades of French conquest as an episode in African, rather than colonial or military history. It has two principal themes. The first is the complex inter-relationship between events in the south east and the broader history of Morocco and its central government during this period of crisis, which ultimated in 1912 in the establishment of the French and Spanish protectorates over the entire country. The second theme is the confrontation between the French army and the people of the south east, who were subjects of the sultan of Morocco but effectively outside the range of government control or assistance. Since this population was fragmented into a number of Arab or Berber-speaking tribes and oasis communities, it faced the crisis of colonial conquest much as did peoples in other parts of Africa who lacked central institutions or ethnic homogeneity."
