The author compares attitudes toward private property and the persistence of Eastern forms of landownership. Gaidar's analysis of Western development offers a perspective on private ownership of property in relation to government ownership. This perspective explains a great deal about the evolution of socioeconomic and political systems East and West.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Yegor Gaidar was the first post-Soviet prime minister of Russia and one of the principal architects of its historic transformation to a market economy. He is a member of parliament, one of the founders of the Union of Right Forces political party, and head of the Institute for the Economy in Transition. He is the author of Days of Defeat and Victory.
