Excerpt from The Parish Registers of Snaith, Co. York, Vol. 1: Baptisms, 1558-1657; Marriages, 1537-1657
Opposite many entries, pointing hands have been drawn in the margin, and of those which appear to be of later insertion I have taken no notice. Many, however, were drawn contemporaneously by the Rev. Jas. Watt, opposite baptismal entries in his handwriting. Each is followed by a number ranging from 1 to 41. Seeing that no less than 14 out of the 27 male children thus distinguished were christened james, I venture to suggest that the hands were employed by Mr. Watt to indicate his god children.
