Excerpt from The Life and Genius of Rembrandt: The Most Celebrated of Rembrandt's Etchings, Thirty Photographs Taken From the Collections in the British Museum, and in the Possession of Mr. Seymour Haden, With Descriptions, and a Discourse on the Life and Genius of Rembrandt

As an artist, Rembrandt has never been fully appreciated in England, except by connoisseurs who have had access to his best works. His own countrymen have always preserved his finest paintings, which may still be seen in the galleries of Amsterdam and the Hague, and his world-renowned etchings are far too expensive to be in the possession of any but wealthy amateurs. It is through the liberality of the Trustees of the British Museum and Mr. Seymour Haden that we are enabled to offer excellent transcripts of the most celebrated of these etchings; and that the names of the Burgomaster Six, Ephraim Bonus, Cornelius Silvius, and the other worthy citizens of Amsterdam whom Rembrandt has immortalized, will now be made familiar where they have been hitherto but little known.
