Comme homme public et comme écrivain, Temple est fort estimé en Angleterre. Ce ministre, dit Hume, à qui la philosophie avoit appris à mépriser le monde sans l'avoir rendu moins propre à s'y faire honneur par son mérite, étoit d'un naturel ouvert, sincère, supérieur à toutes les petites ruses des politiques vulgaires. Hume le loue avec raison de s'être pré servé de la licence excessive qui déshonore presque tous les ouvrages anglais composés à cette époque.
