IN the preparation of this volume I have been assisted by many friends. I am especially indebted to the courtesy of Mr. W. M. Letts, the presiding genius of the destinies of Crossley Motors, Limited, for permission to visit and roam over the magnificent National Aircraft Factory which he built and equipped at Heaton Chapel, Stoekport, to meet the national demand for aeroplanes, and to his technical staff {in regard to the extension of information concerning the construction and equipment of the aeroplane. My thanks are also due to Messrs. Short Brothers, Limited, for facilities to visit the naval airship works at Cardington, Bedford, and to Mr. E. H. Mitchell, the General Manager of the establishment. Particularly in connection with the construction of vessels for trans-oceanic service. I am similarly under an obligation to Messrs. Iliffe and Coatalen for permission to wander over their works to follow the construction of aircraft engines through their many stages, and also to the Handley Page Aeroplane Company, the operations of which I was enabled to study at close quarters. I have likewise received every courtesy and all desired information from the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company, Limited, of Bristol; Messrs. Vickers,' Limited.
