This study will be concerned mainly with Thomas's mistress - her origins and her role in the poem. Although the poem bears Thomas's name, the lady is the central character. It is she who, after the initial encounter at least, compels the action of the romance and finally delivers the prophecies for which every thing else has been preparation. Neither her origins, however, nor her actions in the poem have been as fully explained as the evidence permits.
