This monograph discribes the necessity of preparing the American people to the effects of an atomic disaster and the role of the Chaplain in atomic warfare. It provides some well written suggestions which would save millions of lives if a major atomic attach should be unleashed upon our nation.

I. The American people are not prepared for an atomic disaster. The crude realities of atomic warfare with mass casualities, the contamination of radio active fallout, and the industrial paralysis would create almost incomprehensible problems. Since the horror is more than we can fathom, the reaction has been to ignore the bogeyman in hopes that it will go away. However the divergent polices of East and West are on a collision course and conflict is inevitable.

II. The struggle of ideals between communism and the democracies have converged upon the Military Chaplain. While his position in the Military gives him a greater understanding of the potential dangers of atomic disaster, his calling as a Man of God makes him a prophet of the times. The Chaplain's role-in the pre-disaster period is one of awakening people to the reepen sibilities confronting them. He will be able to speak boldly where politicians and often clergy of civilian parishes tread lightly. Wherever there are opportunities to speak; the church, the school, civic groups, among youth, he should help people implement Civil Defense plans for disaster.
