He proved, and all our experience proves, that life requires a special formation to manifest itself, and certain conglomerates of substance. These conglomerates are the cells and their compounds. Like the individual in its totality, the cell in its turn is the physical body with which the action of mechanical substance is connected, and within which the latter can retain its functions which alone justify the name of life. In the normal state of this con glomerate it is mechanical substance which acts, and acts only on chemical and physical principles.
