But I did not leave the Iron Age behind when I quit Russia. Germany, which I had known and loved when it was a free country, was already in the grip of a more formidable and efficient dictatorship than the one with which I was familiar in Russia.

My next place of residence was Japan and at first that old and physically very beautiful country was extremely relaxing after the grim strain of Russia. But the Iron Age came in full rigor to Asia when Japan, led on by the logic of conquest, pushed forward on the mainland of Asia and China, respond ing to the equally irresistible impulse of newborn nationalism, resisted.
