In the effort to reduce or eliminate damage to pipe systems and other subsurface metallic structures due to stray earth currents from street railways, a great many methods have been proposed or tried. Some of these have been widely used with more or less benefit in many instances and apparent failure in others. The Bureau of Standards has been engaged for some time past in a general investigation of the subject of electrolysis and its mitiga tion, the work being carried on by special appropriations granted by Congress for the purpose.
