Excerpt from Colonial St. Louis: Building a Creole Capital

In the nineteenth century a modern city completely grew over the old town of St. Louis and its plowlands. Except for the pattern of the streets we must look in vain for a single landmark of the early period. Even the Mississippi itself has been so changed that the first settlers would no longer know it. It is the literary task of this essay to provide an eighteenth century view of the Creole settlement which was the capital of Upper Louisiana. To learn of its nature we must go to the surviving documents. Fortunately, there are many of them.
