Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for Schools
Latin belongs to the indo-european family of languages, and is most nearly related to Greek. Its alphabet was taken probably from that of the Dorian Greeks of the trading colony of Cumae in Cam pania. The forms of the letters were similar to, and In the time of Cicero almost the same as, the capital letters now in use in English and other languages of western Europe.
