Excerpt from Miscellanies
As the time draws sensibly near to the survivors of the Williams College class of 1852, as they propose to gather at Williamstown in June to keep their semi-centennial celebration of graduation, I have been led to consider whether there be anything that I could do in a formal yet simple way to make somewhat more memorial than it otherwise might be a meeting to which I look forward with the deepest interest. The only reason why I should entertain a feeling of this sort more than any other member of the class is this: The year following our graduation had not more than one-half passed by when I had received and accepted the position in the college which I now hold Emeritus and with a salary; so that my home has virtually been in Williamstown for fifty years without a break, besides the four years which we spent together here as a college class.
