I have no apologies to make for the manner in which the book is written; it has been my ambition to present the story of Battery A, in a clear and suc cinct style, without embellishment or rhetorical flourish; I have no desire to gather laurels as an author. If the narrative is sufficiently readable to preserve fresh memories of each other in the bosoms of my comrades in arms, - memories of the struggles, hardships, and dangers to which they were exposed in defence of the glorious flag of our united country, - my feeble efforts will have been amply rewarded.
