Being a mixture of oils of various specific gravities, its uses in the trades and the arts havebeen very limited. Though the supply is small, it still exceeds the demand, and the price is correspondingly low.

The idea of using 'hydrocarbon' as a mel for an internal combustion engine was conceived through an inspection of the Laclede gas works, St. Louis. It was learned that the oil had been experimented with in various ways, but, so far as could be ascertained, not in an oil engine.
