Es muss weiter Blainville als Verdienst angerechnet werden, dass er oft bestrebt war, auch anatomische Merkmale für die Klassifikation zu benutzen, wie er z. B. Die der Septen entbehrenden Milleporen von den Madreporarien trennt und zu einer anderen Klasse, den Polypiaires, stellt. Mit prophetischem Blick Spricht er auch die Vermutung aus, dass „parmi les millépores il se peut qu'il y ait quelques genres qui devront passer parmi les madrépores et vice versa (1830, p. Zwar irrt sich Blainville in vielen Fällen bei der Verteilung der Gattungen auf die verschiedenen Gruppen, aber erstaunenswert ist es, wie oft die Verwandtschaft der Gattungen durch eine gute Klassifikation angedeutet ist. Für die Ent wickelung des Anthozoensystems hat Blainville deshalb auch ganz gewiss eine bedeutende Rolle gespielt.
