Many of the facts which would be acceptable to general readers are placed beyond their reach, being recorded only in technical works or else in the memoirs of learned socie ties. The compiler of this little book believes that a work of this kind will be welcomed by the multitude. It is a subject which must needs be of general interest. The usual hand-books on geology give but a meagre account of these colossal proboscidians, which serve only to arouse an interest without being able to gratify it.
