Un commentateur anonyme de Dante raconte que Bondone avait mis son fils en apprentissage à Florence, dans un atelier de l'art de la laine. Quand l'enfant s'y rendait, il s'arrêtait à la boutique du peintre Cimabue. Un jour que Boudone demandait des nouvelles de son fils au patron auquel il l'avait confié, celui - ci répondit qu'il ne l'avait pas vu depuis beau temps. Boudone apprit ainsi que Giotto passait son temps chez les peintres. Il en prit son parti et le plaça chez Cimabue.
