Excerpt from The Capture of Jefferson Davis: An Extract From a Narrative, Written Not for Publication, but for the Entertainment of My Children Only
Communication had been so interrupted that we did not hear of the evacuation of Richmond until Mrs. Davis received a tele gram, ou Wednesday, from the President at Danville, merely announcing that he was there.
As soon as I could do so, and when we had comfortably established Mrs. Davis and her family in the house provided for them, I returned to Danville and joined the President. With several members of his cabinet, he was a guest at Major Sutherlin's house, where I arrived late in the evening, and spent the night.
