This volume is prepared on the same plan with the First Book in Latin, issued about eighteen months ago. The remarkable and unexpected success of that work has encouraged us to persevere in the course of labour we had marked out for ourselves, and, at the same time; has stimulated us to renewed efforts to deserve success. It is with this view that the publica tion of this book has been delayed. Conscientiously, we have Spared neither time nor labour in its prep aration.

For the general plan of our proposed series of elementary books, we refer to the preface to our First Book in Latin, and now only call attention to one or two points peculiar to this volume.
