The mus Faeenm'm' were named from Fmium,' a village in Etrnria. They were responsive in form, were generally extemporsneons, and abounded in jokes, gross personalities, and abuse. They reached indeed such an extreme of license that finally they were restrained by law.' Ia'vy (7. 2) says there was a pestilence in Rome in the consulship of O. Sulpicius Paeticus and C.
