The distance to Pembina, as thus marched, is miles; by the direct route évide Captain Pope' 3 table of distances) it is 4465 miles. The length 0 the direct road from this place to St. Joseph, diverging as we did near Tongue river, is about the same as that to Pembina, viz: 448 miles.

Returning on the east side of the Red river, the route as far as Red Lake river was by the only road yet traced, which runs generally parallel 'to the course of the Red river, and at an average distance from it of (say) 20 miles.

There is no road on the bank of the Red river from Pembina to Red Lake river, owing to the marshy nature of the soil; all of its small tributaries from the east thus far, with the single exception of the Two Rivers river, passing into it through a marsh, instead of Open mouths.
