In making scales Of the first type, no attention is given to the usual distinctions between different forms of written English, such as personal and business letters, narration, description, exposition, essays, etc. Rather the effort is made to measure composition quality regardless of the form. Such scales are based upon the assumption that all forms of written English possess, in a greater or less degree, composition quality. Hillegas, in describing his scale, says, The effort is made to include all forms except poetry. 3 Thorndike, in his extension of the Hillegas Scale, also used mixed types Of composition. A brief description of the two scales is sufficient to indicate their nature and purpose.
