It is a rapid summary of the chief results obtained during the survey of Palestine from Dan to Beersheba, and from the Jordan to the Mediterranean. That sounds a very large undertaking, and so it was for a private society, but, after all, it extended only over an area of something like 6000 square miles, that is to say, little more than the average size of a Madras district. Vizagapatam is about as large as three Palestines. Bellary, before I divided it, was equal to nearly two Palestines.

Amongst the things which interested me most in the book were the pages on the Samaritans and the description of the view from Hermon, from which the writer saw, amongst other things, Damascus, the wild volcanic district of the Trachonitis, now known as the Lenah, the sea of Galilee, Tabor, Carmel, and Tyre.
