Excerpt from Notes on the Manufacture of Pottery Among Savage Races

As the stages of growth of an indivi dual animal may be determined by the study of many individuals in differ ent degrees of development, so may the progressive steps in the evo lution of an art be traced out, with greater or less accuracy, by exam ining that art as practised by peoples of different states of advancement. Materials for the study of pottery in this way are wanting, not only be cause the collections are insufficient, but because the study of an art involves the investigation not only of the pro ducts and their applications, but also of the processes employed in its practise.
