But we cannot venture to hope that any such discoveries, whatever their kind or number, will ever enable us to know Carthage, as we know Athens or Rome, from its own citizens; or will do more than throw a few scattered lights upon that imperial City which - all but unknown to us during five centuries of her growth and her true grandeur - blazes forth into the light of day only in that century which witnessed her heroic struggles and her fall.
