Excerpt from The American Legion Monthly, Vol. 4: January 1928

No transcontinental railways or highways existed then, and hun dreds of thousands of square miles of the Southwest were totally unknown. What few trails had been cut across the continent were constantly harassed by hostile Indians. It was commonly supposed that beyond the Mississippi extended a vast Sahara which could not be traversed by mules, horses or oxen. Congress believed that communication would be greatly facilitated by the use of camels and in 1854 appropriated the money for their importation.
