Excerpt from Lumsden of the Guides: A Sketch of the Life of Lieut.-Gen. Sir Harry Burnett

IN compiling the following sketch of the life of Sir Harry Lumsden, it has been our endeavour, as much as possible, to let him and his associates speak for themselves. Probably, however, no one could have been less conscious than Lumsden that he was leaving behind him any material from which even an outline of his career could be obtained. It was not till after his death that a search at Belhelvie resulted in the discovery that his mother had carefully preserved the full and interesting letters which her son had written to his parents during his Indian career. These letters are produced almost in their entirety. They reveal their author's character with Singular felicity from boyhood onwards. Indeed, it may truly be said.
