This little work has been written in compliance with the request of several professional friends of the author, who were aware that he has had considerable practical ex perience in the construction of Tunnels, and has always taken an interest in the accurate execution of works of the character forming the subject of the present essay. The author has now much pleasure in publishing the results of his investigation of this important subject, which does not appear to have been alluded to in any treatise upon stone-cutting hitherto published. The practical man will at once perceive the great advantage of being able to work every stone in the base of a large shaft, by means of templates, above ground; thus insuring accurate work.
