In the early railway wheels the principle obtained of neglect ing the structure of the frame. And making it depend for strength on the shria of the tire. Just as wood wheels were made. One result of t is was the flattening of the tire between the spokes, and a tire of unequal thickness when turned in the lathe to make the external periphery a true circle, and a conse~ quent rapid destruction in wear. This applied to the wheels with the wroughtiron spokes. The truest formed wheels were those of cast-iron with a wron ht tine. They might break if of careless moulding, but the wou d not otherwise alter their form and the tires could be al of equal thickness. But u n rigid castiron wheels the tires became exposed to very rap' destruo tion as the loads increased.
