N writing an account of the siege of Kumassi, in which my husband and I found ourselves involved very shortly after our arrival there, and of the events which immediately preceded and followed it, and in which I had a share, I have been actuated by a desire to place on record, while the facts are clearly in my mind, an experience which may be of value to those who keep them selves in touch with events of interest in outlying portions of our empire. It has been my aim to state everything as I saw it, without embellish ment, and while it is possible that some may think that here and there I have expressed opinions which are too candid, I can only say that they are opinions which I hold. I have thought that a slight sketch of the social life of the Gold Coast would also be acceptable.
