Excerpt from An Essay on the Ligation and Management of the Umbilical Cord at Childbirth
In an Old edition, I think the first, Of the work already referred to, the author Observes as follows That there is some difference in the structure Of the human cord and that of other animals, is not merely a rational conjecture, but proved by actual Observation. Prof. Brendel, in examining pups and heifers, found their umbilical vessels full Of rugae or folds throughout the whole Of their course, and their size much less also in proportion. In another place the same writer says, that in brutes the vessels Of the cord are much smaller than in man, and that when the animal is born, they are in a measure closed by a kind Of cellular struc ture. From this it appears that m brutes there 1s a peculiar structure Of the vessels Of the cord, tending to interrupt the flow Of blood through them, and favoring their speedy contraction after they have been cut.'
