Rescuing the Church . . . examines how people are initiated into a consumer culture during childhood and thus drawn into pursuing a vocation as consumers by means of various quasi-sacramental rites and practices. The upshot of this is that the church today is composed primarily of men and women whose lives are situated more within a consumer culture than within a distinctively Christian one. In order for the church to free itself, the author believes it must reclaim a sacramental identity that is grounded in a narrative tradition and realized in real, local worshipping communities.

Mark Clavier was born in the United States and is now Residentiary Dean of Brecon Cathedral in Wales, and Chair of the Doctrinal Commission of the Church in Wales. He served as a parish priest for fifteen years in Maryland, North Carolina, County Durham, and Oxfordshire. He was involved in theological education for five years, first at St Michael's College, Cardiff, where he was Dean of Residential Training and Acting Principal, and then at St Stephen's House, Oxford, where he was Vice Principal and Director of Pastoral Studies. His focus continues to be on the theology of delight, especially within the Augustinian tradition; his research has been fertilised by giving public lectures and conducting retreats on delight and by his frequent walks and treks in mountains and wildernesses.
