Inhaltsangabe

Excerpt from System of Shakespeare's Dramas, Vol. 2 of 2

The law against incontinence was the one that was first taken by Angelo, and of whose enforcement there was, of course, the greatest need. An old enactment which had long lain dormant, and which prescribed death as the punishment for the offense, is suddenly raked from its obscurity and executed with rigor. Here was formal justice, undoubtedly. Angelo was technically correct the law had never been repealed - yet his conduct under the circumstances was palpably unjust. But the charac ter of the deputy is to adhere simply to this formal side, to the neglect of all others.
