Excerpt from The Shakespearian Drama: A Commentary

The present is the third shape in which the material of this book has been given to the public. It was first written in the form of detached essays, and printed in various periodicals, without the author's having any intention of composing a work upon Shakespeare. But the essays continued to increase, through a number of years, till they at last embraced all of the poet's, dramas. They originated in the room of the instructor, whose simple principle was to study each passage, scene, and act by itself, then to unite them into the entire play, and finally to unite the plays by the common fact underlying all of them. Thus the work grew, without pre-conceived theory or plan, without even a thought of its own existence at the start.
