In the direction of thermo-chemical investigation great progress has been made but much yet remains to be done in this department of the science before the full significance of the observed facts will become manifest. Partly on this ground, and partly because the subject could not be treated in an instructive manner without making very extensive additions to the book, I have preferred to omit, for the present, a description of the experimental methods and all but the most obvious conclusions.
