Very little attempt has been made by the critics to explain the above - mentioned difficulties of the Covenant Vivien. The critics have been busied rather in determining the position of the poem in the cycle, its relation to poems that have disappeared, and to others that still exist. The Opinions of the critics, none the less, have such an intimate bearing on the poem that it would be un wise to proceed further without retracing, briefly, the history of the criticisms-published concerning our poem.
