Excerpt from Lives of the English Cardinals, Vol. 1: Including Historical Notices of the Papal Court, From Nicholas Breakspear (Pope Adrian IV.) To Thomas Wolsey, Cardinal Legate

Let us hope that as trust worthy a principle will be shown In the appointment of the next, English cardinal, and that he will be guided by the same moderation that actuated the proceedings of the last. While it is of the utmost importance to the Christian world that the Church of Rome should be wisely governed everywhere, all sensible Englishmen must desire that its interests in this country be entrusted only to an administrator capable of winning his way to general confidence by the exercise of a kindly, an enlightened, and a generous spirit.
